Ms. Beaty, I forwarded you the email that was sent to the TV reporter. That was the first time the statement you referenced had been “written” or issued. I am not certain what other records I can provide that would be responsive to your request.

Dear Ms. Taylor,

You have not fulfilled my request. I requested a public record,  the “written statement”. You have created a new record containing the statement.  Now please provide the record that was sent to the media in the original form it was created and transmitted.

Thank you,

Jo Beaty

Statement requested below:

There is no official “close date” for Dignity Village, it is a process and we are taking it one-step at a time. The first step in our strategy is to complete a perimeter fence, which is underway. This ensures we have an accurate census of the number of folks who need assistance during the transition. Once the fence is completed, and we expect to see the fence around Dignity Village completed in the next 30 days, at that point GRACE will open up the on-campus campground. About 112 people have indicated they plan to move on to the GRACE campground once it is opened. We are excited about the opportunity to transition those living in Dignity Village onto the GRACE campus where we can ensure they are receiving the services and support that they need.  By connecting people with resources and providing options instead of mandates, we are hopeful that we can drastically reduce the number of our neighbors without housing.

At Dignity Village, nearly 70 percent say they have viable living alternatives. This is great news. A roster of those living in DV was finalized back in October. At that point, there were 222 people listed. Of those, 107 have been already been rehoused, assigned to other agencies or have left DV. We have been working closely with our mental health partners, county partners, veteran’s organizations and other community advocacy groups throughout this process.

We have utilized best practices, proven strategies and called upon experts to help us develop, what we believe to be, an effective and comprehensive solution.

There is a genuine commitment among local government officials, neighbors and community advocates to do this the right way — that means with compassion, and a great deal of cooperation and coordination.

This is a public record request for the written statement regarding the closing of Dignity Village in which the City of Gainesville says, “There is a genuine commitment among local government officials, neighbors and community advocates to do this the right way — that means with compassion and a great deal of cooperation and coordination.”
